The first Earth Day holiday was held on March 21, 1970 in San Francisco. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations, where it is observed each year.
At around the same time, disturbed that the environment was a non-issue in American politics (and perhaps unaware of San Francisco's plans for the first day of spring), Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed that a national environmental teach-in be held on April 22, 1970. Also dubbed "Earth Day," the event was an enormous success: 20 million people participated in demonstrations, and more than 500 members of Congress made speeches about the environment or attended teach-ins.
Today, the United States officially celebrates Earth Day on April 22 while other countries celebrate it on the first day of spring. Whatever date it is observed, however, this holiday is a good time to consider how we might better care for the planet that sustains us.
